Researcher Training Intensive: Research data management tools at Deakin

Dr Christopher McAvaney, Services Manager, eResearch, Deakin University
Christopher is responsible for managing the IT services provided for researchers at Deakin University. The eResearch program of work ensures researchers at Deakin University are able to tackle the microscope of the 21st century – which really means empowering people to deal with digital information (i.e. data).
Christopher has extensive research administration experience within Deakin Research, developing many workflow productivity tools to streamline and simplify administration tasks relating to research. He has also been heavily involved in government reporting of research outcomes, including two ERA rounds. Christopher’s research background is in parallel and distributed systems, in particular applied research around an automated parallelisation tool.

Dr Jerry Lai, Deakin eResearch
Jerry has a background in psychological science and statistics. He has a passion for data-driven storytelling through which, he helps develop insights into new questions and practices. Led by Dr Christopher McAvaney (Services Manager, eResearch, Deakin University), Jerry works with multiple research teams in Deakin—by providing consultancy, hands-on Support, or through research collaboration—on the following:
- Research Methods and Survey Design
- Data-Analytics and Visualisation
- Statistical Programming
- Promote Statistical Literacy for Non-Statisticians
About the event
The session is specifically for academic supervisors and research students who would like to learn about the Research Data Management (RDM) tools at Deakin.
You will learn:
- how to access the Research Data Store (RDS)
- what the RDS looks like
- how to Projects / Activities in the RDS
- how to create and manage Collections in the RDS
- what Syncplicity is
- what FileShare is
- how to access Syncplicity and FileShare, and the use case of each.
