Researcher Training Intensive: Making the most out of researcher development and training opportunities

Panellists
Professor Doug Creighton (Institute for Intelligent Systems Research and Innovation) is a lead researcher in the largest research team in the field of simulation, optimisation and scheduling for infrastructure, security, materials handling and manufacturing systems in Australia. His research focus is algorithms and methodologies to improve estimation and performance of complex systems operating under uncertainty, variability and continuous change.
Associate Professor Anna Kilderry is associate professor in early childhood education in the Faculty of Arts and Education and is experienced leading research, supervising PhD candidates, leading courses and chairing the faculty HEAG, low risk human research ethics advisory group. For over 20 years Anna has been an academic in Australia and the United Kingdom and is a qualitative researcher who has worked extensively with children, teachers, professionals and families in diverse communities. Realising the need for an interdisciplinary evidence-informed approach in early childhood, Anna is the lead editor of a 22 chapter book, Strong Foundations: Evidence Informing Practice in Early Childhood Education and Care (In press), published by the Australian Council for Educational Research.
Dr Georgina Kelly, Director Graduate Research Academy, is passionate about research training and is Director of the Graduate Research Academy. Georgie has been involved in the research community at Deakin for many years, starting out as a researcher in Engineering and IFM. Since moving to Deakin Research she has worked in a variety of roles spanning researcher development and partnerships before moving to her current role.
Dr Daniela Kaleva, Research Manager, Researcher Development, has a diverse experience in the Australian tertiary education sector. She helps HDR students, academics and researchers to consider their research skills and capabilities holistically to strategize their development and planning. Daniela informs researcher development by considering research paradigms and discipline-specific research cycles, deploying relevant peer-reviewed research and her experience as HDR student, researcher and supervisor.
Helen Woodall, Manager, International Research Training, has worked at Deakin for the last 10 years, for the first 5 years, she worked in a joint position with International Partnerships within Deakin Research and HDR Support Coordinator within IFM before reverting to just working as the HDR Support Coordinator within IFM. In September 2019 she was appointed to the position of Manager International Research Training, where she is now responsible for all HDR (IRT) students and the management of the research partnerships.
Graduate Research Academy
The Graduate Research Academy’s Researcher Development Program spans from HDR students through to early to mid-career academics and researchers. It is delivered in collaboration with faculties and other carriers.
The training aims to build research capacity and support the research process and career advancement in the areas of personal effectiveness, external engagement and communication, and research funding applications, project management and collaboration.
Online resources, webinars and interactive workshops are offered to a mix of HDR students, early to mid-career academics and researchers and senior academics.
About the event
This Q&A session will tap into the knowledge of an experienced panel of guests to explore the necessary skills and capabilities of researchers and how to use training opportunities to build research capacity and skills.
