Join us for a combined celebration of two design exhibitions at Deakin University as part of 2023 Geelong Design Week.

Everyone from Deakin and the Geelong community is welcome to attend an event celebrating Perpetual Pigments and Designing Empathy—the two Deakin exhibitions held as part of Geelong Design Week. You will have an opportunity to walk through both exhibitions and discuss the artwork over refreshments with some of the artists, as well as students and academics from Deakin’s School of Communication and Creative Arts.

Perpetual Pigments is a ground-breaking research initiative and supporting exhibition of renowned Indigenous artists and printmakers. Framed within the circular economy conversation, Deakin’s Institute of Frontier Materials (IFM) with the support of Sustainability Victoria, has developed a process to extract pigments from discarded textiles and fabrics made from natural fibres. This participatory, ‘art meets science’ exploration displays the results of testing that examines the effectiveness of recycled pigments for visual art practice. Inspired by the theme, ‘Sustainable colour continuous culture’, participating artists have produced works using the recycled pigments produced by IFM.

Designing Empathy: Human-Centred Design by Deakin Design Students is a Deakin Library exhibition that creatively unpacks various design processes undertaken by students, who are led by Human-Centred Design and a strong focus on empathy. This way of thinking places the human viewpoint at the centre of the design process ensuring it is adopted into all facets of the design, from conception through to realisation. Design is also an agent of change that can provide real-world solutions to social problems. The projects that students engage with have the potential to improve social wellbeing across Australia through partnering with a variety of not-for-profit organisations as well as providing highly valuable real-world, studio experience for students.
