Neighbourhood: What does the Library mean to you?

Event details

  • Open to the public

About the event

Open from 8 December 2025 to April 2026.

A neighbourhood is a community of intersecting stories and lives. This exhibition showcases the diversity and creativity of Deakin students who have submitted artwork to the annual Library Artwork Competition. It reflects the unique perspectives on what the Deakin Library means to our community, showcasing the Library as more than just a place to study, but the heart of Deakin.

More than a celebration, Neighbourhood is about creating community. Every year, Deakin University welcomes thousands of new students onto campus. With each individual student embarking on a journey to work out how they fit into their new university community, the Library provides a place of connection, embodying the essence of a neighbourhood.

The exhibition invites visitors to participate in the creation of a collaborative group artwork: a paper neighbourhood. Visitors are encouraged to decorate their own paper house, reflecting the vibrancy of the Deakin community.

This exhibition also features selected artworks from Deakin students who have submitted to the annual Library Artwork Competition since 2023. Student artworks respond to the question ‘what does the library mean to you?’ The artist responses showcase that the Library is a diverse place of community, creativity, belonging and connection.
